Our Story

How a passion for reading became a community of thousands

Where It All Began

In early 2018, three friends who'd spent years swapping book recommendations over coffee realised they wanted to create something more permanent. We'd all experienced the frustration of walking into chain bookstores where staff couldn't offer genuine recommendations, where bestseller tables dominated, and where the joy of discovery felt increasingly algorithmic.

What started as a modest storefront with barely enough books to fill the shelves has grown into something we never quite imagined. Not just a bookshop, but a gathering place where readers find both books and conversations that challenge and comfort them in equal measure.

We've never lost sight of what drew us to this work: the belief that reading matters, that human curation beats automated suggestions, and that the right book at the right time can genuinely change how someone sees the world.

What Drives Us

Authenticity

Authenticity Over Algorithm

Every recommendation stems from genuine reading experience. We stock books we believe in, not just what's trending or what publishers are pushing hardest.

Community

Community Connection

Reading may be solitary, but discovering what to read next shouldn't be. We create spaces where readers can share, debate, and celebrate stories together.

Diversity

Diverse Voices

Literature reflects the full spectrum of human experience. We actively seek out and champion voices that might otherwise go unheard in mainstream publishing.

Accessibility

Accessible Expertise

Literary knowledge shouldn't feel intimidating. We make expert recommendations approachable, whether you read one book a year or one hundred.

The People Behind the Books

Our team consists of passionate readers with diverse backgrounds and literary interests. What unites us is a genuine love for books and helping others discover their next great read.

Rebecca Chen

Founder & Literary Fiction Specialist

With a background in comparative literature, Rebecca gravitates toward experimental fiction and translated works. She's read extensively in Japanese, Latin American, and Eastern European literature, and believes the best books make us see familiar things differently.

Michael Okafor

Co-founder & Non-Fiction Curator

Michael's expertise spans history, science writing, and biography. He's particularly passionate about making complex ideas accessible and helping readers build their understanding of the world through thoughtfully chosen non-fiction.

Sarah Patel

Co-founder & Genre Fiction Expert

Sarah champions the often-underestimated world of genre fiction. From crime to science fiction, fantasy to romance, she knows that compelling storytelling transcends literary boundaries and that genre work deserves serious attention.

James Morrison

Events Coordinator

James brings authors and readers together through carefully curated events. His background in community organising ensures our literary gatherings feel welcoming to newcomers while offering depth for longtime members.

Aisha Rahman

Young Adult & Children's Specialist

Aisha works with younger readers and those who love them, helping navigate the vibrant world of children's and YA literature. She believes early reading experiences shape lifelong relationships with books.

Tom Williams

Poetry & Short Fiction Curator

Tom champions shorter forms that often get overlooked. He maintains our poetry collection and short story shelves, and runs monthly sessions exploring contemporary and classic verse.

How We Think About Books

The publishing industry often reduces books to data points: sales figures, star ratings, algorithmic recommendations. We believe this approach misses something fundamental about why reading matters.

A book that changes one person's life might leave another cold. Context matters. Timing matters. What you bring to the page matters as much as what's written on it.

That's why we invest time in understanding not just what books are about, but what they do—how they make you think, what emotions they evoke, which assumptions they challenge. Our recommendations consider not only literary quality but also emotional resonance, pacing, tone, and how a book might fit into your life right now.

We're also unafraid to be critical. We'll tell you when a hyped bestseller doesn't live up to its marketing, or when a lesser-known book deserves far more attention than it's received. Our loyalty is to readers and to literature itself, not to sales targets or publisher relationships.
